WASTEWATER TREATMENT

The City of Havre de Grace owns and operates a treatment plant capable of treating 3.3 million gallons per day of wastewater to the Enhanced Nutrient Level of 4.0 mg per liter of Total Nitrogen and 0.3 mg per liter of Total Phosphorus. Following are a few facts about this fifty million dollar facility:
  • There are approximately 40 miles of sewer collection pipes.
  • We provide service to: 4,600 residential customers, 13,000 customers, and 6 Industries discharging greater than 25,000 gallons per day.
  • We have 15 pumping stations: 2 large stations pumping 1 million gallons per day, 3 medium stations pumping between 10,000 and 1 million gallons per day and 10 small stations pumping less than 10,000 gallons per day.
Recycling the Old Fashioned Way

Our citizens are welcome to free compost for use around their homes and gardens, reducing the need for commercial fertilizers. This free compost comes from the BIOSOLIDS generated by the treatment of waste water.

Biosolids are the bugs that treated the wastewater and contain nitrogen and phosphorous. Because these biosolids contain valuable nutrients, they are processed* to reduce pathogens and then processed further to reduce pathogens. The biosolids are tested for metals and pathogens prior to being distributed to the public and the agricultural community for fertilizers. Contact us at 410-939-1220 for availability and hours for pick-up.

* Processing of biosolids is conducted under the watchful eye of the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and strict regulations by the environmental Protection Agency. (EPA
